Firmware Engineer III, Telephony and Cellular Connectivity, Pixel

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5 years of Systems or Software experience with 4G/5G cellular protocols or Android Connectivity.
  • 4 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages (e.g., C, C++, Python).
  • Experience with one or more of 3GPP protocols IMS, NAS, RLC, RRC, PDCP, MAC code base.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of Systems or Software experience with 4G/5G cellular protocols or Android Connectivity.
  • Experience in cellular stack and with the coding, debugging a problem and optimized issue fixing.
  • Knowledge of Android telephony/telecom framework.
  • Excellent investigative and problem-solving skills, with emphasis on software debugging.

The Pixel Telephony team is growing rapidly to support the next wave of technologies and devices in the connectivity domain. We work on developing and launching mobile communication technologies and collaborate with internal and external partners to ensure a high performance and reliable voice and data connectivity experience for Pixel and Android users.

We design and develop Android applications, Android telephony/connectivity framework that improves connectivity of the Phones and Wearables. We also work closely on the 3GPP standards and other standardization bodies related to telecom.

The Platforms and Devices team encompasses Google's various computing software platforms across environments (desktop, mobile, applications), as well as our first party devices and services that combine the best of Google AI, software, and hardware. Teams across this area research, design, and develop new technologies to make our user's interaction with computing faster and more seamless, building innovative experiences for our users around the world.

Responsibilities

  • Leverage understanding of L2/L3 layers (IMS, NAS, RRC, RLC, PDCP, MAC) to create robust and efficient solutions.
  • Utilize your knowledge of IMS, VoLTE, VoWiFi, and 3GPP specifications to ensure our features meet the highest standards.
  • Work closely with internal software teams and external partners to ensure seamless integration and timely delivery.
  • Translate mobile wireless requirements and carrier specifications into innovative and high-performing features.
  • Own the debugging and bug fixing process, and implement proactive mitigation strategies.
