Software Engineer II, Wear OS Watch Faces

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 1 year of experience with software development in one or more programming languages (e.g., Python, C, C++, Java, JavaScript).
  • 1 year of experience with data structures or algorithms.
  • 1 year of experience with Android application development.
  • Experience with Java or Kotlin.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with Android or other mobile platforms such as Compose, Canvas, Wakelocks, Broadcast Receivers, Intents or similar technologies.
  • Experience with Open Source software development.
  • Experience using AI, either for coding or building user experiences.
  • Knowledge of 2D and 3D graphics technologies, such as Skia, OpenGL and font rendering.

We build the platform and APIs for beautiful, helpful, and power-efficient watch faces on Wear OS. Working within the Watch Software organization, we partner with Pixel Watch, Wear OS OEMs, and developers to shape the personal and visible part of the wearable experience.

The Platforms and Devices team encompasses Google's various computing software platforms across environments (desktop, mobile, applications), as well as our first party devices and services that combine the best of Google AI, software, and hardware. Teams across this area research, design, and develop new technologies to make our user's interaction with computing faster and more seamless, building innovative experiences for our users around the world.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain features for the Wear OS watch face platform using Kotlin, Java, and Rust.
  • Design long-lasting APIs that will be used by developers all over the world.
  • Collaborate with engineers, UX designers, product managers, and partners to solve complex technical problems.
  • Write tests, create tooling, and implement telemetry to ensure the quality and performance of our platform.
  • Work on a varied code base, including graphics rendering, backend state handling and cross-device communication.
