Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 2 years of experience with developing large-scale infrastructure, distributed systems or networks, or experience with compute technologies, storage or hardware architecture.
  • 2 years of experience programming in C++.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: distributed computing, large-scale distributed systems, or cloud infrastructure.
  • Experience with performance analysis and optimization of high-throughput services.
  • Proficiency in C++.
  • Ability to analyze complex system trade-offs (e.g., latency vs. consistency) and justify architectural choices to the broader team.
  • Excellent communication skills and an ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

Static Content Service (SCS) is Google’s static content serving platform for cacheable non-streaming content such as images, JavaScript, and stylesheets. It serves Google's end-user traffic for critical use-cases across all of Google.

We drive reliability and modernization across our global platform. We are pioneering new approaches to infrastructure management at an unprecedented scale, including applying AI to automate maintenance, improve reliability, and modernize our service.

The team is building the next-generation platform for Google's Static Content Service. As a Software Engineer, you will own and develop core features for this globally distributed service, solving issues in scalability and performance. You will collaborate with a team to ship code that has an impact on every product at Google.

The Core team builds the technical foundation behind Google’s flagship products. We are owners and advocates for the underlying design elements, developer platforms, product components, and infrastructure at Google. These are the essential building blocks for excellent, safe, and coherent experiences for our users and drive the pace of innovation for every developer. We look across Google’s products to build central solutions, break down technical barriers and strengthen existing systems. As the Core team, we have a mandate and a unique opportunity to impact important technical decisions across the company.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $141,000-$202,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Write product or system development code.
  • Design, build, and operate the end-to-end services that bridge user requests with Google's backend systems. Your code will run across global cells, managing millions of queries per second (QPS) on the critical path for products like Search, Ads, and YouTube.
  • Lead the design and execution of significant sub-projects, coordinating with stakeholders and senior engineers to ensure smooth integration into the global stack.
  • Leverage machine learning and automation to safely and transparently evolve our production stack, automating complex updates across tens of thousands of customers to maintain a modern and performant global infrastructure.
  • Improve the overall health of the Static Content Service by identifying systemic issues, improving observability, and driving best practices in code quality and testing.
