Director, Detection and Response Operations

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Cybersecurity or equivalent practical experience.
  • 15 years of experience defining and driving a multi-year strategy for threat detection and response.
  • Experience managing a globally-distributed 24/7 security operations team.

Preferred qualifications:

  • 20 years of experience in cybersecurity, with 8 years in a leadership role managing global detection and response, threat hunting, or security operations teams.
  • Experience developing and executing a long-term strategic vision for security operations at an enterprise scale.
  • Experience leveraging automation and orchestration (SOAR) to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of a security operations center (SOC).
  • Experience with the application of AI and Machine Learning (AI/ML) to security data for anomaly detection, threat modeling, and predictive security.

The Privacy, Safety and Security (PSS) organization within Core helps teams across the company deliver essential, exceptional products that set the bar in the industry while also treating users with the profound respect they deserve when it comes to controlling and understanding their data.

As the Director of Detection and Response Operations, you'll leverage automation, artificial intelligence, and threat intelligence to stay ahead of adversaries in a constantly shifting digital environment. You'll effectively guide a global team responsible for identifying, analyzing, and responding to security threats across Google's vast and complex infrastructure.

The Core team builds the technical foundation behind Google’s flagship products. We are owners and advocates for the underlying design elements, developer platforms, product components, and infrastructure at Google. These are the essential building blocks for excellent, safe, and coherent experiences for our users and drive the pace of innovation for every developer. We look across Google’s products to build central solutions, break down technical barriers and strengthen existing systems. As the Core team, we have a mandate and a unique opportunity to impact important technical decisions across the company.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $294,000-$414,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Develop and lead the multi-year strategic vision for Google's global threat detection, incident response, and proactive threat hunting operations.
  • Manage, mentor, and inspire a large, globally distributed team of security analysts, and engineers, while also overseeing the team’s budget and resource allocation.
  • Drive the integration of automation, AI, and machine learning into security operations to scale defenses and stay ahead of advanced adversaries.
  • Inspire and align disparate teams across security, engineering, legal, and policy to work toward a unified vision for a secure Alphabet.
