Minimum qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
- 2 years of experience with programming in Python or C++, or 1 year of experience with an advanced degree.
- 1 year of experience with ML infrastructure (e.g., model deployment, model evaluation, optimization, data processing, debugging).
- Experience with core GenAI concepts (e.g., Large Language Model (LLM), multi-modal).
- Experience with text, image, video, or audio generation.
Preferred qualifications:
- Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or related technical fields.
- 2 years of experience with data structures and algorithms.
- Experience developing accessible technologies.
- Experience with search quality or infrastructure.

Our mission is to drive the development of the generic Vertex AI Search Quality and the semantic ranker (e.g., jetstream) model to deliver search experience.It is a high-impact role at the intersection of advanced ML, core search quality, and significant business outcomes.
As a Software Engineer, you will be leveraging knowledge distillation, fine-tuning and multimodal approaches to push the boundaries of search quality. You will enhance core search relevance and freshness making Vertex AI Search (VAIS) engaged with the best search technologies available.
The Google Cloud AI Research team addresses AI challenges motivated by Google Cloud’s mission of bringing AI to tech, healthcare, finance, retail and many other industries. We work on a range of unique problems focused on research topics that maximize scientific and real-world impact, aiming to push the state-of-the-art in AI and share findings with the broader research community. We also collaborate with product teams to bring innovations to real-world impact that benefits our customers.
Responsibilities
- Write product or system development code.
- Collaborate with peers and stakeholders through design and code reviews to ensure best practices amongst available technologies (e.g., style guidelines, checking code in, accuracy, testability, and efficiency).
- Triage product or system issues and debug/track/resolve by analyzing the sources of issues and the impact on hardware, network, or service operations and quality.
- Build and improve retrieval/ranking Machine Learning models.
- Improve Vertex AI Search core search quality stack.
