Senior Engineering Manager, Pixel, Applied AI/ML

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of experience with software development.
  • 7 years of experience leading technical project strategy, ML design, and optimizing industry-scale ML infrastructure (e.g., model deployment, model evaluation, data processing, debugging, fine tuning).
  • 5 years of experience in a technical leadership role; overseeing projects, with 5 years of experience in a people management, supervision/team leadership role.
  • 5 years of experience with GenAI techniques (e.g., LLMs, Multi-Modal, Large Vision Models) or with GenAI-related concepts (e.g., language modeling, computer vision).

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science, specializing in Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, or Natural Language Processing.
  • Experience with fine-tuning, evaluating, and deploying large language models (LLMs) or other large-scale generative models.
  • Familiarity with the issues of on-device ML, including model quantization, performance optimization, and memory management.
  • Understanding of modern ML model evaluation techniques, including industry-standard benchmarks, quantitative metrics, and qualitative/human evaluation methodologies.
  • Ability to define and execute a multi-year technical strategy for an ML-focused team, aligning it with broader product and business goals.

With technical and leadership expertise, you manage engineers across multiple teams and locations, a large product budget and oversee the deployment of large-scale projects across multiple sites internationally.

As an Engineering Manager for Applied AI, you will lead a specialized team of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) experts at the very core of Pixel's AI strategy that serves as the bridge between Google's foundational models and Pixel software ecosystem. You will harness the immense power of these models by expertly fine-tuning and evaluating them, ensuring they are perfectly adapted to power intelligent, real-world experiences for millions of Pixel users. You will provide the foundational AI capabilities that allow our teams to innovate.

The Google Pixel team focuses on designing and delivering the world's most helpful mobile experience. The team works on shaping the future of Pixel devices and services through some of the most advanced designs, techniques, products, and experiences in consumer electronics. This includes bringing together the best of Google’s artificial intelligence, software, and hardware to build global smartphones and create transformative experiences for users across the world.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $248,000-$349,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee systems designs within the scope of the broader area, and review product or system development code to solve ambiguous problems.
  • Review code developed by other engineers and provide feedback to ensure best practices (e.g., style guidelines, checking code in, accuracy, testability, and efficiency).
  • Develop and execute the Pixel-wide strategy for selecting, fine-tuning, and deploying foundational models to achieve specific product goals.
  • Establish the framework for deciding when to use base models versus when to invest in fine-tuning, creating a clear cost-benefit analysis for the organization.
  • Lead the team in direct, fine-tuning of large-scale models, utilizing the latest techniques to optimize them for Pixel-specific use cases.
